Liposuction surgery works by sucking fat cells out of particular areas of the body. Its a common misconception that extremely obese people can or should get liposuction. Liposuction in fact works best for people who are only either slightly overweight or who have stubborn areas of fat they are unable to reduce through diet and exercise. Liposuction surgery can be performed under local sedation or under anesthesia for more extensive procedures. After local anesthetic is administered to the areas to be liposuctioned, the surgeon then infuses the areas further with tumescent solution comprised of saline and local anesthetic after which the fat cells are then sucked out.
Liposuction surgery can be performed on virtually any area of the body where there is a significant amount of fat cells. The most popular areas are the abdomen, the flanks or love handles, thighs, back, buttocks, upper arms and even the lower face or chin. A typical liposuction procedure takes 2 hours and complications are very rare. Liposuction surgery is often times combined with other surgeries such as breast augmentation, tummy tuck or fat transfer where the fat is injected into other areas of the body to increase volume.
